Aleyna brought down a stuffed whale and asked me who its owner was. After letting her know that it once belonged to me but she was welcome to have it as her own she ran back upstairs. Timothy came to ask me what Aleyna asked me...then Aleyna came back.....
Aleyna: Mom what do whales eat?
Me: They eat fish, and small sea animals.
ALeyna: Do they eat tuna fish?
Me: Yes, I am sure they do.
Aleyna: Can we make some tuna fish for my whale?
Me: Probably not. I don't think your whale would be able to eat tuna fish.
Aleyna: How big are tuna fish?
Me: Pretty big, bigger than you and maybe even as big as Dad.
She then left, ran back upstairs and returned rather quickly.
Aleyna: Mom, what else to whales eat?
Me: Krill.
Aleyna: What is krill?
Me: Any of the small, pelagic, shrimplike crustaceans of the family Euphausiidae, eaten as food by certain whales.......yes I am that smart.....
Tim: Who is eating krill?
Aleyna: Nobody is eating krill.
Tim: Yes you said that you were eating krill.
Aleyna: No I never said that I was eating krill.
Tim: Then who is eating krill? Mom what is krill?
(I am staying out of it at this point)
Aleyna: Tim nobody is eating krill! We don't even have any krill!
Tim: Mom Aleyna said we don't have any krill. Do we have any krill mom?
Aleyna: Tim, we don't have any krill, they live in the ocean.
Tim: Then who is eating krill?
Aleyna: Tim, whales eat krill not us.
Tim: Oh. Want to go make a fort?
Aleyna: Yeah.
At this point the conversation ended and the poor stuffed whale was left downstairs while the two krill quarrelers went off to create!
These conversations take place often....very, very often! I try to encourage imagination and learning, but I cannot, CANNOT get involved with a battle of wits between two 5 year olds!
In other news.....I do like tuna fish!
